You Consider Me an Enemy Because of my Beliefs? (a letter to those who hate Christians)

Not every “non-spiritual” or “non-christian” person, atheist, agnostic (or person from any other religion) is a Christian hater.  That’s why this post isn’t called something silly like “letter to the atheist.”  How ignorant and judgmental it would be for me to assume that all atheists hate what I stand for.  For more thoughts on this stereotyping, read this old post.

This letter is to the person that really does hate what I stand for.  It’s to the person who hates my beliefs, is disgusted with the bible and labels me as inhumane for “brainwashing” my own children with the Christian faith.  This is to the person who writes all Christians off as exactly the same breed, even though it’s quite unfair to do so.

This is for you, dear “Christian-hater.”

Dear Christian-hater,

First of all, please forgive me if anything in this letter sounds arrogant, presumptuous, or simply ignorant to where you stand.  I’m only writing you from a limited perspective and quite frankly, I’m a pretty faulty, flawed-character, judgmental person.  I try not to be and hopefully I’m getting better, but I can’t promise this to be a letter with completely pure motives.

I seriously do not understand why you hate me.  Pretty much, from what I can gather, only because of my belief, you have written me off as A PERSON.  I have not written you off.  My beliefs turn your stomach in disgust.  Your beliefs don’t effect me in that way.

My guess is that you’ve run in to many mean-spirited Christians.  Well, none of us are perfect and honestly, you are right about some of us.  While we are talking about mean-spirited Christians, I’ll take a guess and say that I’d probably prefer to hang out with you over some of these mean/judgmental folks that you see me as.

I bet you’ve read about the atrocities (such as the Crusades) that were spawned by Christian beliefs.  Can I tell you that most of these things were done in the name of religion?  True Christians are folks that do not endorse religion but love and submit to Jesus Christ.

I could imagine that you’ve read some stuff in the bible with a very limited understanding of the context.   Maybe you’ve been scarred by a parent or friend that claimed Christ as Lord.  Maybe you are sick of Christians pretending they are better than everyone else or when they refuse to admit when you are right about something.   Maybe you are sick of “Christian politicians” making a political platform out of their faith right before they have sex with your wife.

But this still doesn’t answer the original question.  Why do you hate me?  I don’t hate you.  You don’t believe in the bible and I don’t find you stupid.  But I believe in the bible and you think I’m an idiot AND you are mad at me.  If you really think that I am so lost and mislead, why don’t you pity me as a fellow human being? Perhaps even try to help me out.

I’m truly imperfect, but here’s the bottom line: knowing about  your beliefs and where you stand beforehand, I’d still have a beer and wings with you (or chips and humus if you are a vegetarian. Can’t promise I’ll eat nasty-ass humus).  You however, knowing my beliefs and where I stand, would have a difficult time looking at me.  I’ve met some of you, read some of your tweets and some of your blog posts and it’s true;  I freakin turn your stomach.

I really hate that my beliefs make you so angry.  But the fact is, I really do believe them, I really do care about you as a person and I really do love you as a human being.  Maybe I’m even wrong about what I believe.  You definitely think this to be the case.  It just seems that if you truly thought I have based my life on such falsehood, and you truly cared about humanity as much as you say that you do, you’d pity me, reason with me and not try to belittle me.

Your friend,

Joey
